What Is a Character Certificate?

A character certificate is proof that you do not have a criminal record. Government offices, police stations, and jobs often ask for this document. In Assam, this certificate is given after the local police check your background.

You may need this certificate for:

  • Government or private job applications
  • College or university admission (in India or abroad)
  • Passport or visa applications
  • Renting a house
  • Arms license applications

Who Can Issue a Character Certificate in Assam?

Only these government officers can issue a valid character certificate:

  1. Superintendent of Police (SP) or Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) — at the district level
  2. Officer-in-Charge (O.C.) — of the police station near your home
  3. Revenue Circle Officer — who works with the police station to check your background before giving the final certificate

How to Apply for a Character Certificate Online

Follow these simple steps to apply from home:

Go to the portal

Open the official e-District Assam website (edistrict.assam.gov.in).

Create an account or log in

Use your mobile number and email to register, or log in if you already have an account.

Choose the right service

Go to “Police Department” or “Revenue & Disaster Management.” Select “Issuance of Character Certificate.”

Fill the form

Enter your name, address, and the reason you need the certificate.

Upload documents

Upload clear scans of your ID, address proof, photo, and reason document (PDF or JPEG, usually under 2MB).

Pay the fee

Pay online through the secure payment page.

Save your receipt

Download the acknowledgment slip. It has your Application Reference Number — keep this safe, as you will need it to track your application.

How to Check Your Character Certificate Status

After you apply, the local police will check your background. This can take some time. Here is how to see the current status:

  1. Go to the “Track Application” page on the e-District Assam portal.
  2. Enter your Application Reference Number and your mobile number or date of birth.
  3. Click “Submit.”
  4. You will see one of these statuses:
    • Pending at Police Station
    • Field Verification in Progress
    • Approved
    • Rejected

How to Download Your Character Certificate

Once your certificate is approved, you can download it in a few clicks:

  1. Log in to the e-District Assam portal.
  2. Open the “My Applications” or “Application Status” page.
  3. Find your application using the Reference Number.
  4. Check that the status shows “Approved” or “Certificate Generated.”
  5. Click “Download” or “View Certificate.”
  6. Save the PDF file to your phone or computer.

This downloaded certificate has a QR code and a digital signature. This makes it valid for official use — you do not need a separate stamp from the police station.

Note: If you applied offline (at a Common Service Centre or police station), you must collect the paper certificate in person after you get an SMS or email.

How Long Does It Take?

Most character certificates in Assam are ready in 7 to 21 working days. The time depends on:

  • How busy the local police station is
  • How complete your documents are
  • Whether extra checks are needed (for example, if you recently moved from another district)

How to Apply Offline

If you cannot apply online, you can still apply in person:

  1. Get the application form from your local police station or circle office.
  2. Fill the form and attach your documents and signed affidavit.
  3. Submit it to the Officer-in-Charge or Circle Officer.
  4. Pay the fee at the counter and keep your receipt safe.

How can I get my character certificate online?

Register on the e-District Assam portal, apply for “Issuance of Character Certificate,” upload your documents, pay the fee, and download the approved certificate from your account once it is ready.

Can I apply for a character certificate fully online?

Yes. You can apply and pay online. But the police must still visit and check your address in person before they approve it.

Where can I download the application form?

You can download the blank form as a PDF from the Assam Police website or the e-District Assam portal, under “Downloads” or “Forms.” You can also collect it at your local police station.

How many days does it take to get a character certificate in Assam?

It usually takes 7 to 21 working days, depending on how fast the police finish checking your background.

Who is allowed to issue a character certificate?

Only the police Officer-in-Charge (O.C.), the Superintendent of Police (SP), or the Revenue Circle Officer can issue a valid certificate.

What if my application status shows “Rejected”?

This usually happens because of missing documents, wrong address details, or a police record issue. The portal will tell you the reason. Fix the problem and apply again with correct documents.
